Writing an entry-level CV with no experience in South Africa
Every professional started somewhere. If you are a student, recent graduate, or entering the workforce for the first time, not having formal work experience does not mean you cannot write a compelling CV. South African employers understand that entry-level candidates are still developing their careers — what matters is how you present your potential.
Start with a strong personal profile
Without years of experience to lead with, your personal profile becomes the most important section of your CV. Use it to introduce yourself, highlight your field of study, and state what you are looking for. Mention your key strengths such as being a quick learner, having strong communication skills, or being proficient in specific software relevant to the role.
Focus on your education
Your education is your strongest asset at this stage. List your qualifications in reverse chronological order, including the institution name, qualification name, and year of completion. If you achieved good grades, include them. Also list any relevant subjects you studied, particularly those that relate to the job you are applying for. If you completed a thesis or major project, briefly describe it.
Include volunteer work and extracurricular activities
Volunteer work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities demonstrate valuable soft skills that employers care about. Have you volunteered at a community organisation? Served on a student council? Participated in a university society? These experiences show leadership, teamwork, and initiative. Describe them using the same format you would use for formal work experience — what you did and what you achieved.
Highlight your skills
Create a dedicated skills section that covers both hard and soft skills. Hard skills might include Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, programming languages, social media management, or data analysis tools. Soft skills could include communication, problem-solving, time management, and adaptability. Where possible, provide context — instead of just listing "Microsoft Excel", say "Proficient in Microsoft Excel including VLOOKUP and pivot tables".
Include part-time work and internships
Even if your part-time job at a retail store or restaurant does not seem related to your career goals, it still counts as work experience. It shows you are reliable, can handle responsibility, and have experience in a professional environment. Frame it positively — highlight customer service skills, cash handling, teamwork, and any times you went above and beyond.
Add achievements and awards
Have you received any academic awards, scholarships, or recognition? Include them. Have you completed any online courses or certifications? List those too. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, Google Digital Garage, and LinkedIn Learning offer free or affordable courses that can help fill gaps in your CV and show employers you are proactive about learning.

- Personal profile — 3-4 sentences summarising who you are and what you offer

Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not apologise for having no experience — focus on your potential instead
- Avoid generic phrases like "I am a hard worker looking for any opportunity"
- Keep it to one page if possible
- Do not include your ID number or bank details on your CV
- Proofread carefully — spelling errors are the fastest way to get rejected
